To me, O'Toole's performance in Lawrence of Arabia was head and shoulders above every one of the competition at the 1963 Oscar's, including a very good Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird, who won the prize (and Peck himself suffered a loss for his magnificently nuanced performance of General Savage in 12 O'Clock High in 1949). It still grinds me he didn't get the Oscar for his Lawrence! Speaking of Larry of Arabia, TCM is releasing it through Fathom events sometime next year on the big screen. I don’t know if you get TCM movies where you live, but it’s an excellent opportunity to see it again in all its big screen glory.

I think he seems young because he has only been really widely known for about 10 years. Let’s compare him to Keira Knightley, who is nearly ten years younger than Benedict but did Bend it Like Beckham (where I first saw her) in 2002 - 16 years ago! She’s had a much longer career than he has had, so he seems younger in terms of acting career. She is female so by Oscar standards she should had won it years ago!!! DiCaprio is another example of a relatively young actor who didn’t have it easy with awards even when most of his movies are prestige films, he has a long career and is widely considered a great actor. He is also extremely successful and probably the last actor who can open a movie just with his name! I think BC is considered a hot property now so I don’t know maybe they considere he doesn’t need them. Or they are envious! I mean just an actor so popular like him would provoke extreme reactions about insignificant things. For example the recently “polemic” about him declaring he hates that people say chamomile infusion is a tea... during a playful interview and between jokes on a silly radio show meanwhile promoting a kids flick in which he plays a green ogre! Somehow it made angry a few people who declared that he shouldn’t be considered a good actor (because that!) and that he is an example of privileged white poshos who talk about frivolous things instead of important stuff (you, know like the pseudo activists who waste their time moaning about what celebrities say!). Of course, when he said something slightly political, which it’s actually frequent, he is also strongly criticized. The point is there is a backlash and the backlash exists because he is also loved by a lot of people. On the other hand, you have the great Hugh Grant. An excellent actor who was also a Hollywood star and was involved in a really ugly scandal (one that wasn’t about the true nature of tea!) who is now being rediscovered. Wasn’t that deluded “working-class“ actress predicting BC would end as Hugh Grant? Not being nominated for the same awards in 2018-19 but sleeping with prostitutes and hitting paparazzi! He was used as example of the worst possible future for “posh” actors! And he is now having a great comeback! I said it before: he has the “right narrative”

That would be a dream come true for me but alas we don't get TCM movies (at least I have never heard of them). To me LoA is THE perfect film! It has everything I could ever want in a movie. I saw it on the big screen (at the drive in) when I was young, but have watched it dozens and dozens of times on the telly (i have two DVDs of it). Every time I see it I fall in love with all over again. 😍😍😍

It is pretty brilliant. And it’s been referenced so many times in other films. One I particularly liked was in A Good Year w/ Russell Crowe, when he accidentally fell into an outdoor pool full of muck, leaves and sticks. He’s swimming around spitting water out of his mouth and he says “I love the desert. It’s so clean.” 😂

They showed it again in 2014 and also in 2017. So it looks like they wil be bringing it back and you can catch it then!

It’s one of the best if not the best looking high resolution movie I have ever watch! Probably its the version they are showing at cinemas in America, considering the years!

I don't have a Blu-ray player. 😕 Perhaps I should ask Santa about remedying this?

Prague is a lovely city and I remember the walk up to the castle well. Sounds like BC is still busy filming in the Czech Republic. But I bet he's probably home on the weekends - just a short flight home to London (2 hours).
