Because it beat Sherlock, I have decided I will watch that Black Mirror episode! I'll let you know how it goes (if there's anything disgusting in it, I'm switching it off)
I'm very happy with The Handmaid's Tale winning! They're going to start shooting S2 soon, and I hope they use the same locations so I can go watch them filming. When they filmed S1, no one around here paid too much attention because it's not that uncommon (we are a popular filming location for those Hallmark movies!) But now that everyone has seen S1, they will definitely draw crowds when filming! And our local news has announced that a huge blockbuster movie will be filming here for two days in October, but it's top secret so they can't say what it is. I'd like to imagine that Benedict is dropping by to film something!
It's too bad he didn't win the Emmy, but I feel better that Robert DeNiro also didn't win. Still, it was exciting to see 1-2 seconds of Sherlock on the tv screen, along with that gorgeous Sherlock music!

This isn't about Benedict, but I was just looking at some Emmy red carpet pictures and I had to laugh, once again, at Sarah Paulson's interesting dress! It's interesting because I have a dress almost exactly like it. A few years ago, I was going to a Halloween thing and I decided to make myself a princess costume. The fabric store had a sale on silver lamé, which I thought was perfect for a princess! Other than a difference in fabric (SP's seems to be silver sequins), my princess costume and her Emmy dress are identical - right down to the puffy sleeves.

Mark Gatiss was at the Emmys! He didn't even tweet that he would be going, but it's nice that he was there to accept the award if the show had won.

that absolutely horrible episode of Black Mirror beat out TLD??? WTF? That is a true abomination IMO. Yeah well, opinions, heard of them? (Sorry, you did say "IMO". I don't know, that episode affected me a lot emotionally and I lashed out at what I found to be "hater-type" criticism, as in no reasons given just "ugh it was an abomination!", about it. Sorry.) I'm super pleased cause I was rooting for it, it's my favorite thing in television all year! It was also very critically acclaimed. Many would have said Sherlock winning would have been an abomination too, cause people hated series 4, but I bet you'd have love that (I wouldn't have minded either, cause I thought series 4 was great and MUCH better than series 3, and TLD was easily its best episode since TRF.) You're right that I should have given my many reasons why I didn't like San Junipero but I guess I was just delivering my disappointment in shorthand because I didn't want to clutter up the thread. But I will say I thought it was wholly inferior to Sherlock and The Wizard of Lies (EITHER of which could have won and I would NOT have been disappointed - yeah, I was rooting for Sherlock but I am not above accepting other quality programmes winning either). First off the writing of SJ was scattered (and this is coming from a person who loves non-linear writing) and confusing to the detriment of the story IMO. This actually caused me to feel very distant from the characters (which is fatal in my book when I am looking at things critically) and not really care about their fates. Then I didn't think the acting was that good, frankly. I thought Mackenzie Davis was very weak in her role - she just was so flat in her delivery (even taking into consideration that her character was mousy) that I didn't get a sense of empathy about her at all. And even Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who I LOVED in Belle, delivered, what I thought, was a wooden, shallow, performance for the most part (partially I am sure due to the material that she was given). I thought the direction of the piece lacked focus (again with the scattered approach to the pacing and plotting, that I just didn't like at all). And I finally I found the music selected for the entire show really, really irritating - too obtrusive, too jarring and just a cacophony of sounds rather than something that supported the visuals and the storyline. It really set my teeth on edge. So I hope this is enough to convince you that I honestly had real reasons for my dislike of San Junipero and that it wasn't just "hater-type" talk done to diss something without giving it a chance. I don't watch regular TV so I tend to focus on limited series rather than serial programmes that are on commercial TV. I tried as much as possible to give every show I watched my "clean slate" approach to view it critically and I really tried to view as many of the competing programmes in the category that Sherlock was in to see what it was up against. Unfortunately I was unable to find a download of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks so I couldn't watch that and for the Dolly Parton one... I just can't (sorry - it was a real anomaly IMO). I didn't have anything against San Junipero when I sat down to watch it. I just didn't like it at all and I won't apologise for that because I did try and give it a chance. And yes, I would have loved it if TLD had of won (even if some people would have called it an abomination) because I thought it was the best of the lot (and again, I will use shorthand and not go into the many, many reasons why I thought TLD was such a great production from the acting, the production values, the flow of the episode, the accessibility of the complex storyline, the emotion and connectability for me personally to the characters and the themes, the beautiful use of music throughout, etc.). But I really liked The Wizard of Lies too. So if that had won I wouldn't have made my comment as I did and it would have been more in line with my comment about BC losing to RA in the best actor category. I hope this clarifies things a bit. :-))

It was the critic's favorite. I even saw a tweet by a very respected critic saying it was the best thing on TV in ALL the year. I agreed that it was very well done and I think both actresses were great and it doesn't bother me that it won at all but I have to admit that the hyperbole it's confusing. After watching the complete series I was slightly surprised it was the most acclaimed episode of all. I kind of understand why it was liked by most compared to the others: it was much less bleak so consensus it's easy.
I think the ending seemed forced and contrary to the other episodes it's show without a real morally/philosophical reflection. It's the only episode in which we don't see a consequence of altering the human experience with technology. Here "living" after dead is just good. Of course, the episode is also politically correct: the ending is happy because they are lesbian and lesbians rarely have a happy ending on TV. So it's cool in that aspect but at the same time I wonder if it would be the same if the character were straight. It wasn't in the rest of the series. What about the one with the male character dying and his wife buying a robot who looks exactly like him? What if she would lived happily ever after with that robot? No consequence. A nice fantasy about evading death without any reflection.

I didn't like it at all but there wasn't anything "disgusting" in it that I recall. :-)) It's an extremely lovely and nice episode. Completely different to the rest. Actually it seems from another very different series. Maybe that's why people loved it so much after having watched all that darkness and bleakness.
