Thanks roverpup! (The "tag a user" thing isn't working, I'll see if I can figure out why.) Your post was very well thought-out and had valid criticism! I had a very emotional reaction to San Junipero as I've had a sort of a heureka moment with my own sexuality in the past couple of years after being in a relationship constantly since I was a teenager. Not a crisis, cause it's not bad, but anyways! Not to go into "too much information" territory here, but I guess it just really touched me for that reason among others. That the main characters could find each other, and love each other, even in their situation and especially for Yorkie who never had the chance in life just gut-punched me in the feels so I'm unable to really evaluate the episode from a more objective point of view. I'm just too emotional about it! I spent the whole episode in tears. Sorry if I came across harshly, I shouldn't be allowed to write anything first thing in the morning lol.

I watched San Junipero last night, and I have to agree with Roverpup: The Lying Detective was far superior and should have won the Emmy. I understand what they were trying to do in SJ, and I guess I can see why it was the favourite of the Black Mirror episodes, but there wasn't really much to it. It reminded me a lot of Bicentennial Man and A.I. Artificial Intelligence - they had the same look, mood and message. There's even an old Twilight Zone episode about a man who falls asleep on a train and wakes up in the 1800's. He figures he's still asleep and dreaming, of course, but it's such a nice escape from his real dreary life that he keeps going there. He loves the slowed-down lifestyle of the quaint town he sees from his window on the train. In the end, he decides to get off the train and remain there
I find this kind of theme depressing even if the ending is supposed to be uplifting. My interest in science-fiction is already limited, but I find "escaping from real life to live in fantasy" especially disturbing, and just not for me. And now I know for certain that I won't be watching any more Black Mirror.
When I think of everything that went into making TLD so good, I'm truly puzzled by SJ's Emmy win.
