Yes. It's disappointing! The worst is that they are being applauded now. At least when it's a favorite who is doing it!

She certainly knows more than me but I doubt studios spend $100 million in campaigns. The important thing is not to win the award but to make money with the publicity the award gives to them so why they would increase spends like that! They cost, of course, but probably it would be around the figure she is giving for Parasite. I remember one of the leaked Sony’s e-mail talked about it and at the end they decided it was better not to spend money in the campaign. I don't remember the numbers, tho. But with $100M you could do a franchise film! EDITED Variety claims past season the top was about $25M (by Netflix). It's still a lot! variety.com/2019/biz/awards/oscar-campaign-spending-1203113199/

This is a very interesting news! I guess there is a possibility that Paramount wasn't very happy with the finished product but considering context it's more probable that they just can't see a way to do a decent theater release so they sold their Oscar hopeful film of the year to Netflix! Also I can't see Netflix rushing to release TPOTD early next year to compete. They already have movies by Spike Lee, David Fincher, Charlie Kaufman, Ron Howard and others! This is their year or at least it should! They are also the main studio that doesn't need theatres and doesn't care about what the owners think ! If they lose it just would confirm that the Academy *DOES* care about what theater owners think! I'm sure they will let the POTD for the 2022 race so most probably it would be released in late 2021. Also who knows when movie shootings would return to normal. Netflix is one of the big winners with the pandemic in more than one way. This new acquisition is an example! But it's possible they won't have a lot of original content for next year so I guess they are happy knowing they at least have a 2022 contender that has a strong possibility to being ready by then. Also I have seen a few award pundits predicting Del Toro's Nightmare Alley for major categories but I understand the production was halted because Covid-19. Recently Del Toro announced he won't be on Twitter for a few weeks because he will resume work in his new movie but it wasn't this but his adaptation of Pinocchio !! Also for Netflix, by the way!

I saw a tweet or post that said that one of the crew had posted on Instagram that they were going to start filming again probably in september.
Also, that originally there were still 2 months of filming left.
In that case they'll have 2 months for post-production.
Why is it a favourite?
I kind of hated Shape of Water so I hope DdelT does a better movie.

Both popular award pundit sites are predicting it for a few of the main categories and I was perplexed because it was one of the very first productions that was affected by the Covid-19! Of course, it wasn't the first time they made predictions based in nothing but it kind of seems insane to me that they don't consider something so big as a pandemic! Especially because we are in the middle of the year and things aren't getting better! At least someone as Anne Thompson has the policy of not predicting productions she hasn't watched! These people are predicting stuff that isn't finished and probably wouldn't be ready to compete!
Del Toro also says that he hopes for a Fall restart and actually he is working in some post-production with the material he already has (meanwhile working in his other project, Pinocchio) but he would have to really hurry up if he wants to have ready the movie for the 2021 Oscar run! Although, I also can't find any article with an official announcement saying they planned a 2020 release before or after the pandemic!
