I doubt there is a more terrying father than David Melrose! He just is in another level of cruelty and perversity! I would say though that Eleanor is a more complex character in the sense that she is both a victim and perpetrator; a “saint” and a monster. Of course, she is NOT worst than the rapist but it’s more difficult for his son to hate her and accept her role in the abuse and that’s pretty damaging for him.
I agreed the attraction of doing something different should had been one incentive but interesting enough he is playing a lot of fathers recently: Not one but two of his characters lose and try to find their daughters (The Child in Time and How To Stop Time); Patrick Melrose has the worst parents ever but good part of the books is he struggling with the horrible prospect of becoming his own father. At the end his saving grace is the love he has for his sons; it’s almost forgotten but the criminal he supposedly would had played in The Man in the Rockefeller Suit was also a questionable figure whose only weakness was his love for her daughter.
I don’t think he choses his character based in if they are fathers or not but like directors, actors could reflect their interests and why not? their own anxieties in the material they feel attracted to. Maybe there is an element of it in him choosing the role of a pathetic brutal bad father.

I think there might be an aspect to him wanting to portray father figures more now (but definitely NOT saying that he is somehow fearful becoming some kind of “pathetic brutal bad father” himself) especially since he has recently become a father for himself in real life. I think it is something he would think about and he already talked about how becoming a father gave him insight into the role of Hamlet. It also might be that he is also getting older and at that age that he makes a very realitic father figure.
Also not saying he has to limit himself to father figures (he obviously does have a lot of options for roles) but I think BC is a very reactive person who does a lot of self-examination and thinking about his overall life as it relates to his acting and being a father is (and always apparently has been) something that is very important to him, so I think he wants to explore that part of him in varying degrees and from all sorts of angles. If his last statement about why he took this role stands then I am lead to believe that BC was fascinated by the clash between the culture-driven father whose roots were intertwined deeply with his own personal violence and the son who wanted to break free of such a brutal tradition bound existence that wouldn’t accept him for who he really was.

I agree he has the “right” age to play fathers but I’m not sure it’s very common that male stars accept that “age” so easily. Especially someone like him who actually looks younger.
I know he is slightly younger but how many fathers has Tom Hiddleston played? Or Tom Hardy? Fassbender? (Steve Jobs has legal issues related to his kids. He didn’t accept paternity of a daughter, I think. I’m not sure if this is portrayed in the movie. I haven’t watched it) How many of those roles were specifically about being a good or bad father?

Perhaps I am misreading your post but I guess what I was trying to say was Ben is more tuned into playing father roles because of who he is (someone who has put a lot of thought into wanting to be a father and having a family) so he in more in tune with that as an actor and really open to exploring those aspects of his humanity. Those other actors may not be coming at roles from the same place as BC is, so that may be affecting what roles they accept. Or it could be that for them other types of roles just appeal to them more? I don't really follow any of the others so I can't really say anything about them. But I don't want to overstate the "fatherly roles" thing too much. I do think that BC would be game for lots of different kinds of roles if they struck him as interesting and offered him something challenging to do (of offered him a new experience). I think he gravitates towards certain films for a variety of reasons... sometimes it is financial security and being part of a mega-franchise (like DS offered), sometimes because it is based on original material that he fell for (like Patrick Melrose), sometimes because he could do a lot of physical acting (DS again or Small Favour), sometimes it was who he was working with (Burlesque Fairytales and Hamlet) and sometimes because it would keep him close to home working in the UK mainly and not in some far off location (like choosing not to do TLCoZ). :-))

I read a few pages and he describes himself and his sister as dark-skinned but he just posted this photo!
They all look very white to me!!! (Nothing bad with being white, of course!)

It’s not something new. A “Summer” shooting was announced since the beginning but still it’s an interview with the scriptwriter.

I can’t wait to see what BC does in this role! Sounds like the writer is an interesting man.
